In a recent segment on CNN’s “State of the Union,” host Dana Bash confronted Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino about the incident. Before introducing him, she aired footage showing Pretti unarmed and holding a cell phone, a fact that has sparked significant debate.

Bash’s opening query to Bovino was pointed: “Multiple angles of this incident show Pretti holding up a cell phone and recording, not a gun. Did he at any point pull out a weapon?”
Bovino’s response was evasive: “We do know that the suspect did bring a weapon, a loaded 9-millimeter high-capacity handgun, to a riot. That much is certain. As for the moment captured in the video, that’s part of an ongoing investigation, and the details will emerge in due time.”
Bash then pressed him on the administration’s claims regarding Pretti’s alleged weapon, prompting a defensive response from Bovino:
“We must consider the situation in its entirety. What led up to this incident?”
Bovino claimed that Pretti had inserted himself into a law enforcement action, which was aimed at apprehending a violent illegal alien nearby. He emphasized that the circumstances leading up to the shooting would be thoroughly investigated.
However, it seemed Bovino was merely shifting the narrative rather than providing substantial answers. For more than 20 minutes, Bash presented video evidence and continued to challenge Bovino, leading to an increasingly uncomfortable interview for the administration.
