Democrats claim GOP ‘sneaked in’ the renaming of the Kennedy Center Opera House for Melania Trump
The amendment to rename the 2,364-seat theater, the second largest in the arts complex, received approval along partisan lines from the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday. Should Congress endorse the House GOP spending bill, it would lead to the enactment of this change, which also funds various federal agencies, including the Interior Department and the Environmental Protection Agency.
“This is an excellent way to recognize [the First Lady’s] support and commitment to promoting the arts,” asserted Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, who chairs the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee.
Conversely, Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, criticized the proposal, alleging that Republicans “sneaked in” this “divisive” amendment without a proper vote on the name change itself. She further stated, “The Republicans have now allocated six times the usual budget for the Kennedy Center, granting significant authority over board appointments and the naming of its various sections, which this amendment appears to confirm.”
