Violence at Brooklyn Federal Jail Raises Concerns for Inmate Safety
An inmate named Uriel Whyte was tragically stabbed to death in June while in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, where he was awaiting trial on firearms charges. The incident, reported by NY1, has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of inmates at the facility.
According to another inmate, who was only identified as Eli, violence is a common occurrence at the MDC, with stabbings happening “at least a couple of times a week”. He described the jail as “very violent”, recounting a horrific incident where a fellow inmate was stabbed in the eye with a makeshift knife.
Former warden of the MDC, Cameron Lindsay, expressed worries about the safety of high-profile inmates like Diddy, who could potentially be targeted by other inmates seeking to gain notoriety. Lindsay told TMZ that some inmates may see harming Diddy as a “badge of honor”, putting his life at risk.
As a precautionary measure, Diddy is being held in the Special Housing Unit at the MDC, which is typically reserved for high-profile inmates or those in need of extra protection. This unit is isolated from the general population, providing a safer environment for inmates who may be at risk of harm.
