A representative for Sean “Diddy” Combs has strongly criticized the upcoming Netflix docuseries “Sean Combs: The Reckoning” produced by 50 Cent, labeling it as a “shameful hit piece” and accusing Netflix of using “stolen footage that was never authorized for release.”

The statement was released just a day before the premiere of “The Reckoning,” following the release of a teaser by Netflix. In the teaser, Combs is depicted on a phone call six days before his 2024 arrest, discussing the need to find someone experienced in the “dirtiest of dirty businesses” to work with them.

When asked for a response to the allegations of stolen footage, Netflix stated that the documentary series includes intimate footage shot with Combs’ knowledge but did not clarify how the footage was obtained.

The full statement released by Combs’ representative reads:

“Netflix’s so-called ‘documentary’ is a shameful hit piece. Today’s GMA teaser confirms that Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release. As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr. Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”

The statement further accuses Netflix of sensationalizing every aspect of Combs’ life without regard for the truth, in order to capitalize on media frenzy. It also criticizes the decision to give creative control to Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson, a longtime adversary of Combs.

The statement concludes with a personal note, expressing disappointment in Netflix for giving Combs’ life story to someone who has publicly attacked him for years. The breach of trust is highlighted as a significant issue, especially considering Combs’ respect for Ted Sarandos and admiration for the legacy of Clarence Avant.

The spokesperson hints at more to come, indicating that the situation is far from resolved.

This controversy underscores the complexities of documentary filmmaking and the ethical considerations involved in portraying real-life individuals. It raises important questions about creative control, legal rights, and personal relationships in the entertainment industry. As the story unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Netflix and the individuals involved respond to these serious allegations.
