President Trump’s recent selection of Pete Hegseth to lead the Department of Defense is a bold move that signals a shift in the administration’s approach to military leadership. Hegseth, a smart and creative leader, is expected to bring about significant changes in two key areas within the DoD.

One of Hegseth’s primary objectives is to expose senior military officers who prioritize their own interests over the mission of the organization. Many of these officers have been focused on promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) within the military, rather than prioritizing military effectiveness. Hegseth’s appointment poses a threat to these officers, as he aims to remove ineffective leaders and ensure that general officers are held accountable for the officers they promote. This will help break the cycle of self-promotion and ensure that the military is led by the right individuals.

Additionally, Hegseth is committed to refocusing the DoD on its core purpose of lethality—the use or threat of deadly force to win wars and deter enemies. By eliminating leaders who prioritize social theories over military effectiveness, he aims to encourage accountability and forward-thinking approaches within the military. This shift in focus will send a clear message that the primary goal of the military is to win wars and protect the country, rather than prioritize individual egos.

Supporting subordinate commanders is crucial for national security, as demonstrated by the Chinese government’s contemptuous response to Secretary of Defense Austin’s phone calls. President Trump’s administration has a history of supporting the DoD through sanctions and other measures, which will likely continue under Hegseth’s leadership. This whole-of-government approach will enable Hegseth to effectively engage with foreign militaries and address military threats to the United States.

Furthermore, the Trump transition team is already laying the groundwork for forward-leaning tariff plans through legislation, which will provide a more permanent government position for economic policies that support the DoD. Hegseth will have a stronger position to address military threats with the backing of economic policies that are not solely reliant on executive actions.

In conclusion, President Trump’s selection of Pete Hegseth signifies a departure from traditional military leadership norms and a commitment to adapting to modern challenges. Hegseth’s leadership will prioritize military effectiveness over self-promotion and social experiments, ensuring that the DoD remains focused on its core mission.
