Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business, and the world

Donald Trump recently made headlines with his bold proposal to include Canada in his ambitious “Golden Dome” missile defense shield. The US president claimed that it would cost Canada $61 billion to be part of the system if they remained a separate nation, but that it would be free if they decided to become the 51st US state.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”

However, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney quickly dismissed the proposal, emphasizing that Canada is an independent and sovereign nation that will not give up its autonomy to become a US state. Despite this, discussions between the US and Canada regarding defense agreements, particularly in light of the growing geopolitical tensions in the Arctic Circle, continue to take place.

The Golden Dome system, which aims to intercept advanced threats such as hypersonic missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles, faces significant technical and financial challenges. With an estimated cost of up to $542 billion over 20 years, the development of space-based interceptors for the shield remains a daunting task.

While Trump has been vocal about his plans to integrate Canada into the US, King Charles of Canada recently emphasized the country’s commitment to its freedom and independence. In a speech opening Canada’s parliament, King Charles highlighted the nation’s increased defense spending and partnerships, including a recent deal with Australia to develop an Arctic radar system for enhanced surveillance and threat detection.
