A Harrowing Incident on the Dan Ryan Expressway

A tragic incident unfolded on the Dan Ryan Expressway on January 22, 2023 when Marcus Holmes, 41, caused a fatal accident resulting in the death of two women and injuries to several others. Holmes, driving at a staggering speed of 107 mph with a gun on his lap, pleaded guilty to two counts of DUI causing a fatal accident and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon with prior convictions, as revealed by court records.

The collision took place in the inbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway near 47th Street late at night. A driver initially struck the center divider, prompting another driver to stop and help clear the road. It was during this moment of assistance that Daphene Monroe, 43, slowed down in her vehicle with three passengers on board.

Tragically, Holmes failed to brake and rear-ended Monroe’s vehicle at an alarming speed, resulting in the deaths of Monroe and one of her passengers, Patrice Dean, 44. The impact also caused injuries to the other passengers in Monroe’s car. Shockingly, data from the black box in Holmes’ vehicle indicated a complete lack of braking before the collision occurred.

As a result of the crash, Monroe’s vehicle overturned and collided with the good Samaritan and the driver who had initially hit the median, leaving both individuals with severe injuries. Holmes himself suffered a broken hip and femur. Furthermore, a blood test conducted at the hospital revealed Holmes had a blood alcohol level of 0.215, significantly surpassing the legal limit of 0.08. Paramedics who rescued Holmes from the wreckage also discovered a loaded handgun on his lap.

Justice Served

On Friday, Judge Michael Clancy handed down a sentence of 18 years for each DUI count and 14 years for the firearm charge, to be served concurrently. Holmes was credited with 859 days towards his sentence for the time spent wearing an ankle monitor during the case proceedings.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and irresponsible behavior behind the wheel. Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating event.
