While the promise of enhanced safety is enticing, as no one wishes to see the annual toll of around 40,000 traffic fatalities and countless serious injuries continue, many fear the profound impact on employment rates.
For those anxious about job loss, advancements in artificial intelligence only add fuel to the fire. AI programs like Grok, Claude, and Perplexity are now adept at passing the Turing Test, blurring the lines between human and machine interaction.
This widespread trepidation often stems from the “lump of labor” fallacy—the mistaken belief that there is a fixed amount of work available and that machines will simply displace human jobs. Historically, this perspective has proven inaccurate.
Consider a time when nearly 98% of Americans worked on farms, essential for feeding the nation. Today, that figure has plummeted to around 2%. In such a scenario, we might witness a dramatic reduction in the workweek, perhaps down to just ten, five, or even one hour, all because our needs could be met with minimal human labor. This wouldn’t be a disaster; in fact, it could be quite liberating.
If this utopian vision becomes reality, it won’t stem from limiting working hours or clinging to existing job roles.
