Mexico City Earthquake Interrupts President’s Press Briefing

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A powerful earthquake shook southern and central Mexico on Friday, causing panic as seismic alarms blared during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press briefing of the year.

The earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, originated near the town of San Marcos in Guerrero, close to the popular Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, as reported by Mexico’s national seismological agency.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at a depth of 21.7 miles, just 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo in Guerrero’s mountainous region, approximately 57 miles northeast of Acapulco.

Shortly after the earthquake, Sheinbaum resumed her press briefing and confirmed that Guerrero’s Governor, Evelyn Salgado, had assured her that there were no significant damages reported so far.

Both residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco rushed out into the streets when the shaking began.
