Renowned filmmaker Ron Howard embarks on another ambitious project with “Eden,” a gripping survival thriller that weaves a narrative reminiscent of both “Robinson Crusoe” and “Lord of the Flies,” set against the imposing backdrop of the Galápagos Islands.

Rating: R | Duration: 2h 9m | Genres: Drama, Survival Thriller, Biopic | Release Year: 2025

Despite its merits, “Eden” has encountered a wave of criticism on Rotten Tomatoes, which raises eyebrows. Two core elements seem to be at play: first, the marketing genius of actress Sydney Sweeney, who has made headlines with her savvy American Eagle campaign; second, Ron Howard’s earnest attempt at profound storytelling, echoing Spielbergian grandeur. How scandalous, indeed!

With Sweeney’s advertisements stirring the pot and supposedly “bringing sexy back,” critics have taken issue with the implications of her campaign. By forgoing the expected norms of representation and defying the “go woke, go broke” narrative, American Eagle celebrated a staggering sale of around $400 million in a single day. Perhaps there’s an irony in success found in straightforward marketing.

As for Howard, who previously charmed audiences with lighter fare like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” critics seem puzzled by his departure into heavier themes. Apparently, they’ve forgotten his earlier successes in films like “A Beautiful Mind” and “Apollo 13.” Perhaps it’s simply human nature to drag down those who rise too high, akin to crabs in a bucket.

‘Eden’

The 71-year-old Ron Howard, who successfully transitioned from child actor to celebrated director, now tackles a raw and unflinching exploration of human nature with “Eden.” This film starkly contrasts his prior work, offering a gripping examination of survival’s darker impulses.

Set in the 1930s, “Eden” captures the flight of individuals seeking refuge from the encroaching fascist regime of Nazi Germany. The plot unfolds on Floreana, a remote Galápagos Island—ironic, given its historic tie to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution explored in “On the Origin of Species.” (Filming, of course, took place in Australia for practical reasons.)

An intriguing aside: Karl Marx dismissed Darwin’s theories yet repurposed them to bolster his own ideas in “The Communist Manifesto.” It appears that even in ideological battles, the lines remain blurred.

Howard places human virtue under scrutiny in “Eden,” portraying not just survival but the oft-ugly reality of human nature, where dishonesty and cruelty can triumph over goodwill.

Speaking of Crab Buckets

At the center of the narrative is Dr. Frederick Ritter, portrayed by Jude Law—a botanist who has escaped the Reich with his partner, Dore Strauch (Vanessa Kirby). Together, they aim to cultivate their version of paradise on Floreana.

Ritter, a self-styled philosopher pursuing an existence detached from societal shortcomings, champions love and solitude achieved by distancing oneself from mainstream human connections. Ironically, he embodies profound misanthropy, seeking both isolation and the spotlight for his philosophical musings.

Dore, despite battling multiple sclerosis, aspires to overcome her affliction, believing that meditation and intimacy hold the key to emancipation from her condition.

Meanwhile, Heinz Wittmer (Daniel Brühl), disillusioned by the socio-economic climate, is driven to join Ritter’s sought-after utopia, trailing behind his family—wife Margret (Sydney Sweeney) and son Harry—thanks to Ritter’s inspiring writings. Unfortunately, the warm welcome they anticipate is far from granted; the established duo views the newcomers as unwelcome intruders.

The Baroness

Just as the Wittmers stake their claim, they confront the ostentatious Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn (Ana de Armas). Upon arrival, her entourage drowns the senses in luxuries, abandoning their own labor as she plots the construction of a seaside luxury hotel, leaving the grunt work to her entourage.

As tensions rise over dwindling supplies, the veneer of civility crumbles, leading to a showdown marked by manipulation and hostility. The plot thickens with nail-biting confrontations, including a harrowing birth scene disrupted by wild dogs—a stark testament to survival’s ferocity.

Overall

Based on true events, “Eden” delivers a captivating account of survival, human folly, and ethical ambiguities amidst existential struggles. Who survives and how fate’s cruel hand decides who is cast aside adds another layer of intrigue to this astonishing narrative.

With standout performances from a stellar cast, the film boasts strong female leads. Vanessa Kirby remarkably exhibits both harshness and unexpected sympathy in her role, while Sydney Sweeney fully immerses herself in her character, suggesting a transition from youthful roles to serious acting chops—a potential career-defining performance. Meanwhile, Ana De Armas plays a campy femme fatale with just the right amount of malicious charm.

As for the men, Law’s portrayal invites sympathy despite his philosophical failings, while Brühl encapsulates the struggle against moral decay on the island.

In “Eden,” Howard may have crafted what is potentially his most haunting cinematic masterpiece to date, a sobering narrative of humanity on the brink.

Vertical will release “Eden” in theaters on August 22, 2025.
