Evergreen High School to Gradually Resume Classes After Recent Shooting Incident

Evergreen High School staff and students will be returning to work and classes in a phased manner starting Monday, following a shooting incident that occurred on school premises over a week ago.

Principal Skyler Artes announced that staff members will be back at school on Monday to prepare for the upcoming weeks.

Parents are invited to attend information sessions on Monday and Tuesday at Bergen Park Church, conducted by experts from the National Mass Violence Center. The sessions, titled “Understanding Mass Violence Impact on Children – How Parents & Caregivers Can Help,” aim to provide support and guidance.

An open house and school walkthrough for parents and students are scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Students will gradually return to school on Thursday and Friday from 8:30 to 11 a.m., with various activity options available to choose from. Lunch and transportation services will be provided.

Further details will be shared on Sunday regarding the upcoming schedule.

The high school has been closed since the shooting incident on Sept. 10, which resulted in two students being injured. The perpetrator, 16-year-old Desmond Holly, later succumbed to self-inflicted injuries at the hospital.

One of the injured students, Matthew Stone, 18, remains in critical condition. Another student, whose identity has not been disclosed, is in serious condition at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Artes emphasized that families and students will have the opportunity to explore the school at their own pace on Wednesday, with additional healing activities and mental health support available on-site.
