During his marriage to Redmon, McConnell became a father to three daughters: Elly, Claire, and Porter. In contrast, his marriage to Chao did not result in any children, even though she is known for being family-oriented.
Reflecting on their choice to not have children, Chao shared with CNN, “I try not to have too many regrets. But I often advise young women, particularly those from my generation who were taught that one could have it all, that balancing a career and family isn’t as simple as it seemed.”
Chao further elaborated, “My advice to young women is to be aware of the inevitable tradeoffs and sacrifices in life. Recognizing these moments is crucial, as it would be unfortunate to unknowingly make a tradeoff without the opportunity to reconsider.”
