The diplomatic exchange over global K-pop group BTS between the Presidents of Mexico and South Korea has sparked a heated debate online. President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that she formally sought help from President of South Korea Lee Jae-myung to explore additional Mexico tour dates for BTS’ upcoming ARIRANG world tour stops in Mexico City.

In a TikTok video posted on February 20, Sheinbaum mentioned that she had asked Lee to consider adding more shows in Mexico due to overwhelming fan demand. Lee responded by confirming that the request had been conveyed to BTS’ agency. However, he emphasized that pop-culture activities are led by the private sector and that the government cannot compel artists or agencies to alter tour schedules. Despite this, Lee expressed hope for a positive response and called for continued diplomatic communication between the two nations.

In his letter, the South Korean president also acknowledged the deepening ties between the two countries based on mutual respect and trust. He thanked the Mexican public, especially young fans, for their strong interest in Korean culture.

The request for additional BTS shows in Mexico came after tickets for the group’s Mexico City concerts sold out within 37 minutes, with over one million people attempting to secure seats for only about 150,000 available tickets across three scheduled shows. The Mexican federal consumer protection agency, Profeco, pledged to investigate alleged irregularities by ticket sellers and resale platforms following fan complaints.

However, the move by Sheinbaum to involve the South Korean president in seeking more BTS ARIRANG Mexico shows drew criticism on social media platforms. Fans argued that political figures should not interfere in artists’ tour planning, calling it unnecessary and inappropriate. Critics emphasized that concert scheduling should remain a matter between the artists and their management.

Despite the backlash, Sheinbaum urged patience as BTS has yet to expand their Mexico tour dates ahead of their world tour. The group is scheduled to hold concerts in Mexico City on May 7, 9, and 10, 2026, at the GNP Seguros Stadium as part of their ARIRANG world tour. As of now, no additional Mexico tour dates have been announced.

BTS’ ARIRANG 2026–2027 world tour is set to officially launch on April 9, 2026, in South Korea, with stops in Japan, the United States, and several Latin American destinations. The tour is planned to span 82 performances across 34 cities and regions, showcasing the group’s artistic growth and connection with their global fandom, ARMY.

Ahead of the tour, BTS is preparing to release their fifth full-length album, ARIRANG, on March 20, 2026. The album will feature creative contributions from all seven members and will blend the group’s signature sound with themes of gratitude towards fans and reflections on their personal and professional journey. To celebrate the album launch, BTS will host a special event titled BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang on March 21, 2026, in Seoul.

In conclusion, the involvement of political figures in artists’ tour planning has sparked controversy, with fans urging the focus to be on tackling scalping and illegal ticketing issues rather than pressuring artists to change their schedules. The situation highlights the delicate balance between diplomacy and artistic freedom in the entertainment industry.
