‘Faster and more efficient’: AI scribe tool being used in emergency departments

The Minister of Health has revealed that doctors using an artificial intelligence scribe tool are now able to see an additional patient per shift, on average.

Simeon Brown has made the announcement that every emergency department in the country now has access to this innovative tool. The AI scribe tool records consultations and generates draft clinical notes, referral letters, and follow-up summaries.

According to Brown, 80 percent of surveyed staff at Auckland’s Middlemore Emergency Department reported that the tool improved productivity and efficiency. Additionally, 84 percent said it had a positive impact on their overall experience and wellbeing during a shift.

“New Zealand is now one of the fastest health systems in the world to implement nationwide frontline AI use in emergency departments. This advancement helps clinicians spend more time with patients and less time on paperwork,” Brown stated.

He emphasized that while AI will never replace clinical skill or judgement, it will play an increasingly vital role in supporting frontline healthcare staff and facilitating faster and more efficient access to care for patients, both now and in the future.

“Our commitment to investing in digital technology that prioritizes patients at the core of the healthcare system aims to enhance access to care and achieve better health outcomes for all New Zealanders,” Brown concluded.
