A Chicago Man Faces Federal Firearms Charges After Parole Violation

A Chicago man who was sentenced to five years in prison in 2023 for a violent crime is now facing federal firearms charges after allegedly being caught with a loaded pistol just months after his parole.

Keyshawn Bunch, 23, was paroled in December 2024 and is now charged in a federal criminal complaint for carrying a loaded firearm on the South Side in August. The incident occurred when Chicago police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man walking with a gun in his hand near 87th Street and Indiana Avenue.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers spotted Bunch riding a scooter in circles in the middle of the intersection. When they attempted to approach him, Bunch fled on foot while holding his waistband. After a pursuit, officers found him bent over a bush in a front yard and recovered a loaded Glock 26 9mm pistol.

Bunch was initially charged in state court with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. The federal authorities have now decided to pursue a similar charge at the federal level.

Prior to this incident, Bunch had been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery at the Congress Plaza Hotel on South Michigan Avenue. In that incident, Bunch posed as a housekeeping worker to gain access to a female guest’s room, brandishing a BB gun and stealing cash and her phone.

Despite facing more serious charges such as armed home invasion, attempted criminal sexual assault, and kidnapping, Bunch received a plea deal in connection with the hotel robbery. He was also out on bail at the time for felony identity theft and illegal possession of multiple debit or credit cards.
