The discovery of the long-lost remains of the tugboat known as the J.C. Ames in Wisconsin has captured the attention of maritime enthusiasts and historians alike. Christopher Thuss, the step-grandson of a renowned Great Lakes shipwreck finder, stumbled upon the wreckage while angler fishing on Lake Michigan near Manitowoc. The vessel, one of the largest and most powerful of its time, had been resting just nine feet below the water’s surface for over a century.

After Thuss reported his discovery to the Wisconsin Historical Society, experts from the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association conducted a dive to investigate the mystery wreck. Maritime archeologist Tamara Thomsen was able to confirm the identity of the vessel by matching its decaying wood hull with archival records. The J.C. Ames, originally built in 1881 as the J.C. Perrett, was a 670-horsepower tug used for hauling lumber and railroad barges between Wisconsin and Illinois.

The history of the J.C. Ames took a dramatic turn in 1923 when the vessel was stripped of its valuables and intentionally scuttled near Manitowoc. As onlookers watched, the hull was set ablaze before sinking to the bottom of Maritime Bay, where it remained hidden under sand for decades. Recent lake currents exposed parts of the wreckage, revealing the destructive presence of quagga mussels, an invasive species that poses a threat to underwater artifacts by covering and ultimately crushing them.

The discovery of the J.C. Ames adds another chapter to the Thuss family’s legacy of uncovering historic shipwrecks. Shipwreck Suzze Johnson, Thuss’s step-grandmother, made headlines in 2015 for discovering three Lake Michigan shipwrecks in just three days while flying over them in a powered parachute. The legacy of exploration and discovery continues as new generations uncover the secrets of the Great Lakes.

In conclusion, the rediscovery of the J.C. Ames serves as a reminder of the rich maritime history that lies beneath the waters of the Great Lakes. Through the efforts of dedicated enthusiasts like Christopher Thuss and his family, these historic artifacts are brought back to light, allowing us to glimpse into the past and appreciate the legacy of the vessels that once sailed these waters. Plastic pollution is a global crisis that is threatening our environment and ecosystems. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste are produced, with a significant portion of it ending up in our oceans, rivers, and landfills. This pollution not only poses a threat to wildlife and marine life but also has detrimental effects on human health.

Plastic pollution is a major concern for marine life, as animals often mistake plastic debris for food. This can lead to ingestion and choking, causing harm and even death to these creatures. Additionally, plastic waste can entangle marine animals, leading to injuries and suffocation. The impact of plastic pollution on marine life is devastating, with reports of whales washing up on shore with stomachs full of plastic bags and sea turtles becoming trapped in plastic six-pack rings.

Furthermore, plastic pollution also poses a threat to human health. Microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles that result from the breakdown of larger plastic items, have been found in the food we eat and the water we drink. These microplastics can contain harmful chemicals and toxins, which can be transferred to humans upon consumption. Studies have shown that these chemicals can have negative health effects, including hormonal disruptions, reproductive issues, and even cancer.

In addition to the environmental and health impacts, plastic pollution also has economic consequences. The cleanup and management of plastic waste cost billions of dollars each year, with governments and organizations struggling to find effective solutions to the problem. Furthermore, industries that rely on clean oceans and environments, such as fishing and tourism, are also affected by plastic pollution, leading to economic losses and job insecurity.

It is clear that plastic pollution is a pressing issue that requires immediate action. Governments, industries, and individuals must work together to reduce plastic waste and implement sustainable solutions. This includes investing in recycling infrastructure, promoting the use of biodegradable materials, and implementing stricter regulations on plastic production and disposal.

As consumers, we can also play a role in combating plastic pollution by reducing our plastic consumption, recycling properly, and supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability. By taking these steps, we can all contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
