The founder of the popular Mexican restaurant chain Las Palapas, Edward “Ron” Acosta, met a tragic end at the hands of his own nephew, David Ruiz. The incident took place in San Antonio, Texas, where Acosta was found stabbed to death in his mansion in a gated community.

Ruiz, who had been suffering from severe mental health issues including paranoid hallucinations, traveled from California to Texas with a pistol in hand. His father, James Ruiz, expressed concerns about his son’s deteriorating mental state, fearing he might harm himself. Little did he know that his son would end up committing a heinous crime against his own family member.

Before heading to Texas, Ruiz displayed alarming behavior, including sleep deprivation, hallucinations, and extreme paranoia. Despite his father’s warning to Aaron Acosta, the son of the Las Palapas founder, Ruiz made his way to San Antonio. Upon arrival, he was invited to stay at his uncle’s home instead of going to his cousin’s house as originally planned.

A family gathering was called to discuss Ruiz’s mental state, but the situation took a tragic turn when Acosta was found unresponsive with multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts to stop the attack, Acosta succumbed to his injuries, leaving a void in the San Antonio community where he was well-respected for his charitable work and strong faith.

Ruiz fled the scene but was later apprehended by the authorities in Kimble County, where he awaits extradition to face a first-degree murder charge in Bexar County. The Las Palapas Restaurant chain, which Acosta founded in 1981 and later sold his majority stake in 2020, expressed deep sorrow over his untimely death.

Acosta was remembered as a man of deep faith, generosity, and community leadership. His impact extended beyond his restaurants, bringing people together and creating opportunities for many. His legacy will be cherished and missed by those who knew him.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the devastating consequences that can arise when individuals do not receive the support and treatment they need. Acosta’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, as the San Antonio community mourns the loss of a beloved figure.
