Virat Kohli, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, expressed deep sentiments for New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Kohli reflected on how their relationship evolved from being competitors in 2008 to forming a strong friendship.
Kohli and Williamson first faced each other during the 2008 U-19 World Cup held in Malaysia. Over the years, they encountered each other numerous times on the ICC tournament stage, eventually joining the ranks of the esteemed ‘Fab 4’ of modern cricket, alongside England’s Joe Root and Australia’s Steve Smith.
On June 12, Kane Williamson announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket through Instagram. After reading his post, Virat Kohli conveyed his thoughts and best wishes to Williamson via X:
“From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years but more than that I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond. I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet.”
Kohli also wished Williamson well for the forthcoming chapter of his life, concluding with the notion that ‘life has only just begun’ for the New Zealand cricketer.

Williamson led his team to victories over Kohli’s squad in the 2019 World Cup semifinal, the 2021 T20 World Cup group stage, and the 2021 World Test Championship Final. However, Kohli’s remarkable 50th century was instrumental in securing India’s win against New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup semifinal. Two years later, they clashed once more in the ICC Champions Trophy final in Dubai, where India emerged victorious, allowing Kohli to claim victory over his Kiwi counterpart in ICC tournaments.
