Investigation Reveals Shocking Animal Welfare Abuses at AD Harvey Farm

A recent investigation has uncovered disturbing footage of workers employed by AD Harvey mistreating hens at Kettleby Farm. The workers were caught on camera kicking, throwing, and violently handling the birds, demonstrating a blatant disregard for their well-being. The footage shows the workers catching up to five hens at a time, swinging them by their legs, and slamming them into crates.

The hens were subjected to repeated acts of violence, including being hit with feeders and crates. As a result of this brutal handling, many of the birds sustained injuries such as broken bones, bruising, and suffocation. These actions clearly violated multiple animal welfare regulations, including the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007, the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and DEFRA’s Code of Practice for the Welfare of Laying Hens and Pullets.

Animal Welfare Advocates Speak Out

Animal Justice Project has condemned the abuse at Kettleby Farm, stating that such incidents are not isolated within farms in the UK with RSPCA Assured status. The organization’s spokesperson, Palmer, expressed concern over the widespread pattern of abuses that have been uncovered, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of animal welfare standards.

The group is calling on the RSPCA to disassociate from its assured scheme and instead focus on promoting a future free from animal farming, which is known to contribute to both suffering and environmental degradation.

AD Harvey Responds

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for AD Harvey defended the company’s practices, claiming that they are committed to continuous improvement for the benefit of bird welfare, employees, suppliers, and customers. The spokesperson asserted that their practices have improved significantly and meet all relevant welfare standards.

RSPCA Assured’s Stance

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for RSPCA Assured has stated that AD Harvey has successfully passed an assessment by specially-trained assessors to rejoin the scheme. The organization has conducted an independent review of RSPCA Assured, including unannounced visits to over 200 members, and plans to communicate their findings in due course.
