Gemini, the AI assistant developed by Google, is set to receive a major upgrade known as Personal Intelligence. This update is described as an “experimental, opt-in service” that aims to revolutionize the way AI interacts with users. As a Pixel 10 user, I have relied on Gemini for various tasks, but often found its capabilities lacking when it comes to providing personalized assistance.

The standout feature of the Personal Intelligence update is its focus on context. Rather than simply retrieving information from the web, Gemini will now be able to understand the user’s preferences and tailor its responses accordingly. This level of customization is what I have been hoping for in an AI assistant, as it promises to make Gemini more useful in everyday scenarios.

Google refers to this upgrade as “connecting the dots”, emphasizing the ability of Gemini to provide personalized recommendations and solutions. For instance, when asking for recommendations in a city like San Francisco, Gemini will take into account the user’s interests and preferences to offer relevant suggestions, such as local sports events and popular attractions.

One of the key benefits of Personal Intelligence is its ability to retrieve information from various sources, such as Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube History. This means that Gemini can access relevant data to assist with tasks like shopping for specific items or planning activities. By understanding individual needs and preferences, Gemini aims to set itself apart from other AI assistants in the market.

However, there are some limitations to consider. The Personal Intelligence update is currently only available in the US and requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription. It will eventually be expanded to other countries and made accessible through the free tier and the AI Mode tool in search. Additionally, users will need to opt in to activate Personal Intelligence, and the feature is only compatible with personal Google accounts.

Overall, the Personal Intelligence update represents a significant advancement in AI technology, making Gemini a more powerful and personalized assistant. I look forward to experiencing this upgrade outside of the US and witnessing how it enhances the overall user experience. With Gemini set to power the upcoming Siri AI upgrade, its influence is poised to extend beyond Android devices, solidifying its position as a leading AI assistant in the market.
