Disney executives have made it clear that they will continue to fight for a fair deal with Google’s YouTube TV, after the streaming service abruptly pulled Disney-owned networks such as ESPN and ABC from its platform.

In a memo sent to employees, Disney Entertainment co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, along with ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, expressed their disappointment with YouTube TV’s actions. The executives stated that YouTube TV removed Disney’s channels without any prior notice, cutting off access to live programming and deleting previously recorded shows from subscribers’ libraries.

The memo highlighted the lack of regard YouTube TV and its parent company Google have shown towards their customers throughout the negotiation process. Disney believes that YouTube TV is not interested in reaching a fair agreement but rather aims to eliminate competition and devalue the content that has contributed to the service’s success.

Despite the setback, Disney remains committed to working towards a beneficial deal with Google and YouTube. The executives emphasized that they are only asking for fair rates for their channels, a standard practice with other distributors.

In response to Disney’s accusations, a Google spokesperson claimed that Disney’s demands would result in higher prices for YouTube TV subscribers. Google argued that such a move would harm customers while benefiting Disney’s other live TV products like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo. If Disney’s content remains unavailable on YouTube TV for an extended period, the streaming service has promised subscribers a $20 one-time credit.

Disney recently merged its Hulu + Live TV business with Fubo and stated that the carriage fee increases demanded by Google are in line with agreements reached with other distributors.

The list of Disney networks removed from YouTube TV includes ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, Freeform, FX, Disney Channel, Nat Geo, and more. Despite the blackout, Disney reassured employees that they will keep them informed as the situation progresses and provided alternative ways for viewers to access their content.

The executives praised the efforts of employees in creating high-quality and compelling content, particularly in sports programming on ESPN and ABC. They emphasized the value of their channels and the importance of standing firm against tactics that threaten their business integrity and creative work.

Overall, Disney remains committed to reaching a fair agreement with YouTube TV and ensuring that viewers have access to their beloved programming. The company appreciates the dedication of its employees and is grateful for their continued focus and professionalism amidst the ongoing negotiations.
