The latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy delivered a surprising and emotional twist with an unexpected death.

In the episode that aired on Thursday, March 19, Lucas (played by Niko Terho) and Simone (played by Alexis Floyd) were caring for Katie (played by Samantha Marie Ware) at home as her condition deteriorated. As they comforted her, Lucas and Katie reflected on how different things could have been if she hadn’t fallen ill.

Simone was worried about Lucas, who was more focused on prolonging Katie’s life than easing her suffering. After Simone hid some canisters from Lucas, he hurried back to the hospital to retrieve them. Tragically, by the time he returned, Katie had already passed away.

Lucas placed the blame on Simone for causing him to miss Katie’s final moments. The two characters had initially met earlier in the season following Katie’s car accident during her treatment for gastric cancer. Her stage II diagnosis had worsened after the withdrawal of her treatment from the market.

Meanwhile, Winston (played by Anthony Hill) finally acted on his feelings for Jules (played by Adelaide Kane). Teddy (played by Kim Raver) and Owen (played by Kevin McKidd) also made a return as they adjusted to their changing relationship after rekindling their romance just days after finalizing their divorce.

Raver, who has been portraying Teddy since season 6, commented to Us Weekly in January, “A couple of scripts came in [recently] and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ It gets messy and it is so Grey’s Anatomy. I just love it so much.”

The actress shared insights into the upcoming developments for the cast.

She shared her enthusiasm about the table reads, saying, “We’re all reading what’s happening [during a table read], and I love it. Some of us are in scrubs, some of us are in our street clothes. Then, when we find out the information, it’s a shock and a surprise to all of us. We are like the audience, too, and then we look at each other like, ‘This is really happening.’”

Raver assured fans of the series that exciting storylines are ahead and expressed no anxiety about her character’s future. She remarked, “That’s the life of an actor. It’s really just about trying to be present and doing the work and following the amazing story lines that the writers are given. Especially with how now we’re always having these incredible cliffhangers. No one ever knows.”

She anticipates viewers will be captivated by the upcoming episodes, adding, “There is a cliffhanger, so I think that that’s going to be really surprising. … I love being able to go every day and be able to tell these stories from a director’s point of view. Each story line leaves us with that quintessential Grey’s Anatomy vibes where you are crying, laughing and the residents are so good. There’s a lot of shenanigans going on with them. It’s a really exciting episode.”

Raver further explained, “I feel like every time I direct a new episode of Grey’s, there are more things [I learn] because there’s a different format or a different way to shoot it. But I think maybe my confidence in how I want to tell this story and where I want to put the cameras [has gotten better]. TV moves so fast, so I feel like the more I do, the more comfortable I am with the speed that you need to go through it. I am just getting more and more comfortable with the craft of it, which allows me to then really enjoy the process.”
