A Man in Custody for Deadly Shooting on Near North Side
After officers heard gunfire on Chicago’s Near North Side, a man has been taken into custody for a deadly shooting. The suspect was spotted casually walking away with a cane and was tracked to the Loop using surveillance cameras and license plate readers.
The incident occurred just before 9:50 a.m. in the 800 block of North Cambridge Avenue. A 46-year-old man, sitting inside a Chevy Suburban, was targeted by a gunman who opened fire in broad daylight.
Initially mistaking the gunfire for fireworks, officers in an unmarked CPD vehicle nearby were alerted when the victim approached them for help. Despite their efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds to his back.
Upon noticing a man limping away using a cane, officers in CPD’s Near North District reviewed camera feeds and identified the suspect fleeing in an Audi Q7.
Using license plate readers, the suspect’s movements were tracked into the Loop where his vehicle crashed into several cars near Michigan and Wacker around 10:17 a.m. The suspect was swiftly apprehended, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.
So far this year, the Near North Side has seen 33 shooting victims, including 18 individuals wounded in a drive-by outside Artis Lounge on West Chicago Avenue. Here is a comparison of year-to-date shooting totals in recent years:
