Motorcycle Buyers Beware: Chicago Police Warn of Robberies in Oakland Neighborhood

Chicago police are urging caution to anyone looking to purchase a motorcycle through an online marketplace, especially if the deal leads to the Oakland neighborhood. In recent weeks, three people have fallen victim to armed robberies in the 4000 block of South Oakenwald and the intersecting 1000 block of East 48th Place.

According to CPD, victims arriving with cash to buy a motorcycle advertised online are directed to a nearby alley. Once there, a gunman emerges and takes their money, leaving the unsuspecting buyers empty-handed.

The robberies took place on Oakenwald on October 4th at 6:45 p.m. and on November 10th at 3:30 p.m. Another incident occurred on November 26th at around 4 p.m. on 40th Place. Police have described two suspects involved in these crimes – one who lures victims to the alley and another who carries out the holdup. Both suspects are described as Black, between 5’8″ and 5’10” tall, and wearing dark clothing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward by calling 312-747-8380 and referencing crime pattern #P24-1-183A. Similar incidents have been reported in other neighborhoods, prompting increased vigilance among online buyers.

In a similar case from September, CPD utilized a SWAT team’s drone to monitor a section of East Garfield Park where several people had been robbed during Facebook Marketplace meet-ups. The efforts paid off with the arrest of two suburban men allegedly caught in the act. Prosecutors revealed that one of the men had been involved in five similar robberies in the area between June and August.

As the holiday season approaches and online transactions become more common, it is crucial for buyers to exercise caution and prioritize safety when meeting strangers for transactions. Stay alert, trust your instincts, and report any suspicious activity to authorities promptly.
