Rumors swirled that the Trump administration was poised to unveil a plan extending Obamacare subsidies for an additional two years. However, just as anticipation peaked, the White House decided to hit the brakes on the announcement regarding its healthcare proposal.
What prompted this sudden halt? Enter Speaker Mike Johnson.
The Wall Street Journal reported:
Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) has informed the White House that a significant portion of House Republicans are not inclined to support the extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. This situation underscores the political difficulties in preventing substantial healthcare cost increases for many Americans next year.
This warning from Johnson, conveyed during a phone conversation with administration officials, coincided with President Trump’s advisers putting together a healthcare plan that aimed to prolong these subsidies for two years.
Intriguingly, there appears to be a faction of moderate Republican lawmakers who would likely back an extension of the Obamacare subsidies if it were brought to a vote in the House.
So why the hesitation? It’s not that Johnson lacks the necessary votes; rather, he simply doesn’t want to pursue the extension.
Hakeem Jeffries did not hold back on CNN:
It seems clear that the votes are there in the House of Representatives, potentially even in the Senate, to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits. Unfortunately, the Republican leadership in the House shows no desire to take that route.
This is the same group that has orchestrated a Republican healthcare crisis, wreaking havoc on individuals across the nation.
It’s worth noting that just this year, Republicans pushed through one of the most significant cuts to Medicaid in American history, putting 14 million Americans on the brink of losing their health insurance. Consequently, hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers are shuttering their doors nationwide.
