Concourse Media, a Los Angeles-based sales firm, has secured worldwide sales rights to the Costa Rican family drama “April” (“Abril”) ahead of its premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 7th.

The film, directed and written by Hernán Jiménez, tells the story of April, a divorced woman played by Maricarmen Merino, who struggles to connect with her resentful daughter. When her daughter decides to live with her father, April finds solace in a budding relationship with Gabriel, a charismatic bartender portrayed by François Arnaud in his first Spanish-speaking role. As April navigates this unexpected bond, buried truths from her past threaten to unravel her.

Kristin Harris, head of acquisitions at Concourse Media, praised the film for its intimate and universal storytelling, highlighting Jiménez’s empathetic direction and Merino’s powerful performance.

Based on his own strained relationship with his mother, Jiménez drew inspiration from personal experiences to craft the narrative of “April.” The film’s emotional depth reflects his own journey of reconciliation and understanding with his mother.

Produced by Jiménez and Esteban Quesada under their production company Witch Rock, “April” has been described as a bittersweet exploration of family dynamics and personal growth.

Jiménez, known for his work in Costa Rican cinema and English-language projects, expressed gratitude for Concourse Media’s support in bringing “April” to a global audience. The film’s premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival marks a significant milestone for Jiménez and his team.

Shot in Costa Rica, “April” showcases the country’s growing presence in the film industry, with competitive incentives, skilled crews, and diverse shooting locations attracting international filmmakers.
