If you’re unfamiliar with what a VPN does, it is an application that routes your internet connection through a server prior to reaching the website or service you wish to access.
In this instance, that server should be located in the UK, with BBC iPlayer as the service. By using a VPN, your actual location is concealed from the BBC, which believes it’s streaming a show to a viewer located within the UK. In reality, you might be anywhere, such as Australia, Spain, or beyond.

The BBC asserts that their goal with account registrations is not to pursue iPlayer users without a paid TV Licence; however, they do admit they will scrutinize the email addresses against a database to check compliance.
