The family of two teen mariachi musicians has been released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody following public backlash. Representatives Joaquin Castro and Monica De La Cruz announced their release. Antonio and Caleb Gámez-Cuéllar are members of an award-winning high school mariachi group from Texas. They were detained along with their parents and younger brother. The family had filed an asylum claim after fleeing violence in Mexico. The brothers were held at separate detention centers in Texas. Their detention sparked outrage and criticism of the circumstances. Castro questioned why they were performing at prestigious venues while being detained. The Gámez-Cuéllar family, consisting of all five members, was finally released on Monday after facing immense pressure from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, as well as the general public. The release came after Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-Texas) and others rallied for their freedom.

De La Cruz, who had previously invited the brothers to perform on Capitol Hill, expressed her commitment to exploring legal avenues to assist the family. However, she faced criticism for her support of Trump’s immigration policies and was accused of only acting under external pressure.

Despite the backlash, De La Cruz stood by her decision to support the family, stating, “I was honored to stand with Antonio and his fellow mariachis when they visited my office last year, and I am honored to stand with him again.”

The case of the Gámez-CuĂ©llar family highlighted the harsh reality of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics and raised concerns about the targets of such policies. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) emphasized the unnecessary suffering endured by the family and condemned the administration’s mass deportation agenda.
