Zaccharie Risacher and Dame Sarr are two young European basketball players who have taken different paths to the NBA Draft and NCAA basketball. Risacher, the top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, made his way to the US straight from European basketball, while Sarr opted to play for Duke University. Both players have shown immense potential, but their journeys to this point have been quite different.
Risacher, a 6-foot-8 forward born in 2005, made his mark playing for ASVEL and Bourg in the Euro League and the LNB Pro A and Elite leagues. His career took off in the 2022-23 season when he started getting more playing time and averaged 3.2 points per game in the Euro League and 2.6 ppg in the LNB Pro A League. However, it was in the 2023-24 season that Risacher truly shined, averaging 13.1 ppg in the Euro Cup and 10.1 ppg in the LNB Elite League. His stellar performance earned him the top overall selection in the NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, and he proved himself with an impressive rookie season, averaging 12.6 ppg.
On the other hand, Sarr, born in 2006, played for Barca in the Euro League and the Liga ACB in Spain. His journey has been a bit slower compared to Risacher, as he only started to show his potential in the 2024-25 season. Sarr averaged 1.8 points per game in the Euro League and 5.8 ppg in the Liga ACB, shooting 43% from 3-point range in the latter. While Sarr’s development wasn’t enough to make him a top NBA Draft pick, he brings a lot of talent to Duke University for the upcoming season.
The comparison between Risacher and Sarr highlights the different paths that young European players can take to reach the NBA Draft and NCAA basketball. Risacher’s early success in European leagues paved the way for his rapid rise to the NBA, while Sarr is still developing his skills and potential at the collegiate level. Both players have bright futures ahead of them, and it will be interesting to see how their careers unfold in the coming years.
