Hulu has recently acquired the rights to Amy DuBois Barnett’s debut novel, “If I Ruled the World,” with plans to adapt it into an hour-long drama series. The novel is inspired by Barnett’s groundbreaking career as the first Black woman to lead a major mainstream magazine in the United States. Throughout her career, Barnett served as the editor-in-chief of Ebony, Teen People, and Honey magazines, as well as the deputy editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar.
The novel, which was sold to Flatiron Books in 2024 after a competitive auction, is set to be published on Tuesday. Described as a fast-paced and juicy debut, “If I Ruled the World” offers a peek behind the scenes of the hip-hop music and glamorous magazine scene of the late 1990s, written by someone who truly understands the industry.
Veteran producer Emma Watts, known for her work at Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox, along with acclaimed filmmaker Lee Daniels, known for projects like “Empire” and “Precious,” are set to produce the TV adaptation of the novel. Watts was drawn to the project after reading the manuscript and approached Daniels to co-write the pilot with Barnett.
The story of “If I Ruled the World” revolves around Nikki Rose, a young magazine editor who finds herself as the only Black editor on staff. As she navigates the volatile world of hip-hop, fashion, and editorial culture in the Y2K era, Nikki faces challenges and obstacles, including being told that “Black girls don’t sell magazines.” Determined to prove herself, Nikki quits her job to take over a struggling hip-hop music and lifestyle magazine, Sugar, with just six months to turn it around.
As Nikki delves into this new world of wealth, decadence, and debauchery, she must also contend with her powerful and married ex-lover and former boss, Alonzo Griffin, who is intent on destroying both her and Sugar. The series promises plenty of drama as Nikki strives to save the magazine and pursue her dreams while navigating the complexities of her personal and professional life.
Barnett will also serve as an executive producer on the project, alongside Daniels. The talented team behind the adaptation is sure to bring Barnett’s compelling story to life on screen. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new series coming to Hulu soon.
