A shocking incident occurred when a hunter, John Lowe, shot and killed two pet dogs with a bow and arrow while out hunting deer with his son in Indiana. The tragic incident took place on private property and was reported to the authorities by another hunter who heard the dogs yelping in pain.
The two dogs, a beagle named Josie and a chocolate lab named Bear, belonged to a woman who was devastated to discover their lifeless bodies. The beagle had a fatal injury to its rib cage, and the GPS tracking device attached to Josie’s collar had been destroyed.
Lowe and his son were seen dragging the dead lab along a path, and when questioned by the witness, Lowe claimed they were looking for a place to dispose of the dog’s body. However, the evidence suggested otherwise, as the wounds on the dogs indicated that the arrows were shot from an elevated position, like a tree stand.
Despite Lowe’s claims that he shot the dogs in self-defense as they were barking and moving aggressively towards him, witnesses contradicted this story. The key witness stated that the dogs had always been friendly in previous encounters, and he did not hear them barking before they were shot.
Authorities did not believe Lowe’s explanation that he killed the dogs to prevent them from scaring away deer. As a result, he was charged with two counts of killing a domestic animal and obstruction of justice, both felonies. His son was also charged with obstruction of justice.
After paying a cash bond, both Lowe and his son were released from the La Porte County Jail. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible hunting practices and the devastating consequences of reckless actions.
