The arrest of an illegal migrant in Oregon has brought attention to the issue of sanctuary policies and their impact on public safety. Manuel Cruz-Ramirez, a Mexican national, was charged with rape, purchasing sex with a minor, and sexual abuse, but was not referred to immigration officers due to Marion County’s sanctuary status. It was only when he was caught using a fraudulent Mexican passport at the Portland International Airport that he was apprehended by TSA and CBP agents.

According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, Cruz-Ramirez’s case highlights the dangers of releasing criminal illegal aliens back into American communities. If not for the vigilance of TSA and CBP, he may have fled the country. Cruz-Ramirez had previously been deported in 2018 but managed to re-enter the US at an unknown time and place. He is now in ICE custody, and his removal order has been reinstated.

The incident in Oregon is just one example of the challenges faced by law enforcement in sanctuary cities. In Portland, where protests against federal law enforcement have been ongoing, DHS recently launched an investigation into an individual who was arrested with knives and materials to make Molotov cocktails. The 18-year-old resident had allegedly planned to attack an ICE office in Portland.

The rhetoric surrounding ICE agents, with some Democrats likening them to Nazis and gestapo, has raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the importance of cooperation between local and federal authorities to ensure public safety. In cities where such cooperation exists, like Memphis, crime rates have significantly decreased.

The case of Manuel Cruz-Ramirez serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of sanctuary policies and the need for effective collaboration between law enforcement agencies. It underscores the importance of upholding immigration laws to protect innocent Americans from potential harm.
