Rafael Silveira’s surreal portraits are a mesmerizing blend of the wonderful and the weird, with faces that resemble scenic vistas, blossoms for eyes, or nothing but coral above the shoulders. The Brazilian artist delves deep into the human mind, creating artwork that merges elements of nature with uncanny hybrid features to evoke a sense of humor tinged with a hint of darkness.

His upcoming solo exhibition, “Agricultura Cósmica,” at DCG Contemporary in London, promises to take viewers on a journey through the fertile terrain of the subconscious. Drawing inspiration from pop surrealism and the uncanny, Silveira’s work envisions the mind as a garden where thoughts bloom into wildflowers of vivid imagery.

Silveira primarily works with oil on panel or canvas, often framing his pieces with ornate, hand-carved wooden frames that add a sculptural element to his creations. These frames, adorned with symbolic motifs like anatomical hearts or all-seeing eyes, serve as talismans that enhance the enigmatic allure of his artwork.

While many of Silveira’s portraits start with a traditional head-and-shoulders composition, they quickly veer into surreal territory. Human forms are transformed into landscapes, with distant horizons replacing skin, or heads replaced by elements like coral or fire. In some pieces, the human figure is entirely absent, replaced by vibrant flowers that convey a range of emotions from awe to desire.

“Agriucultura Cósmica” opens on June 12 and runs through July 10, alongside an exhibition by embroidery artist Flavia Itiberê. Silveira’s work invites viewers to embark on a visual exploration of the subconscious, where reality blends seamlessly with the fantastical.
