Instagram Expands Instagram for TV App to Google TV

Instagram is now bringing its Instagram for TV app to Google TV devices in the U.S., following its initial launch on Amazon Fire TV in December. The app was created to extend the viewing experience of Reels beyond mobile devices, allowing users to browse through their Instagram feeds directly on their television screens.

This move by Instagram is aimed at enhancing its competitiveness with YouTube, which has a strong hold on the TV market. By offering a TV app, Instagram hopes to attract viewers to switch to its platform while enjoying content on the big screen, similar to traditional TV channel surfing. TikTok, a rival platform, also has its own TV app.

The Instagram for TV app is tailored to each user, displaying Reels that align with their preferred content and creators on the Instagram mobile app. Reels are categorized into channels and topics like comedy, music, and lifestyle for easy navigation and discovery.

With automatic playback, users can seamlessly watch Reels without the need to manually scroll for the next video. The app also allows users to like, view comments, and share Reels with others, providing a more interactive viewing experience.

Users have the option to link the TV app with their existing Instagram account, enabling them to access up to five accounts within one household. Alternatively, they can create a new account specifically for TV viewing.
