Taylor Swift’s track “Cancelled!” serves as a commentary on cancel culture, leaving fans to ponder the identities of those who inspired the song.
“You thought that it was acceptable from the start,” the 35-year-old Swift croons in this piece, the tenth on her album The Life of a Showgirl. She continues, “The issue could have been resolved easily / But they’ve already chosen your grave and hearse / Beware of the fury from masked saviors.”
She questions, “Did you push too hard, aiming for the sun? / Were they onto you enjoying yourself too much? / Join me, when they spot us, they’ll scatter / Something sinister is approaching / Thankfully, I embrace my friends with a bad reputation / I adore seeing them cloaked in luxury and controversy.”
Although Swift, 35, typically avoids naming her inspirations directly, fans have speculated that “Cancelled!” may pertain to friends Brittany Mahomes or Blake Lively. Brittany, 30, spouse of Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, formed a close relationship with Swift during her romance with her current fiancé, Travis Kelce. Brittany has also faced significant public scrutiny, particularly regarding her political views.
On the other hand, Lively, 38, has maintained a friendship with Swift since 2016, although their bond has recently soured due to the actress’s ongoing legal matters with Justin Baldoni, her co-star and director from It Ends With Us. (Swift was briefly called to testify, as Baldoni’s team suggested she was involved in the project; Swift firmly denied this.)
Some fans have alternatively suggested that “Cancelled!” may not focus on either Lively or Brittany, but instead point towards Sophie Turner.
“I don’t believe ‘Cancelled’ is about Blake Lively; I think TikTok fans are onto something with Sophie Turner, especially given the timelines,” one user on X commented, noting that Swift penned Showgirl in 2024, coinciding with Turner, 29, grappling with her divorce from Joe Jonas.

Jonas, 36, initiated divorce proceedings against Turner in the fall of 2023 after four years of marriage, which has triggered a custody dispute over their two young daughters.
“The idea that Taylor’s ‘Cancelled!’ relates to Sophie Turner and how the media turned against her following her divorce from Joe Jonas, ties into this notion of ‘matching scars,’” another fan commented on X.
Swift also briefly dated Jonas in the early 2000s until he ended things with her in an infamous 27-second voicemail.
“Welcome to my underworld where shadows loom / At least you realize who your allies truly are,” Swift expresses in the lyrics. “Welcome to my underworld where shadows loom / At least you know exactly who your allies are / They’re the ones with scars to match.”
She further elaborates, “Loving you is effortless when you’re in the spotlight / The perception aligns, and everyone thrives / But with one slip-up, you’re out of the game.”
Additionally, fans noted that the song uses the British English spelling, “Cancelled,” which could align with Turner’s background from England.
Swift extended her support to Turner during her divorce, even offering the Game of Thrones actress a temporary home.

“Taylor generously offered Sophie an apartment in NYC while she manages her divorce situation,” an insider told Us Weekly in September 2023. “Taylor is mostly focused on being supportive without prying into details. She wants Sophie to feel secure and welcomed during this transition.”
Turner later referred to Swift as an “absolute hero” for her unwavering assistance.
“I’ve always maintained that my girlfriends are my greatest loves,” Turner expressed in a June 2024 feature in British Vogue. “The support I received from the women in my life was astounding. I felt immensely protected and cherished. … I am so grateful for Taylor because she stepped in, offering us a home and sanctuary. Her kindness is remarkable.”
As of now, Swift has not disclosed the specific inspiration behind “Cancelled!”
“It’s somewhat a humorous reflection on the social outcry that everyone seems to experience these days,” Swift remarked about the song during her “Release Party of a Showgirl”. “Feeling ‘cancelled’ can arise from any social backlash directed at you. I’ve often been at the center of such discussions about my life and actions. Hence, when anyone faces backlash, they frequently turn to me for support.”
The Grammy award-winner added, “I aimed to create a song that reflects how one can grow wiser from such experiences, becoming more discerning over time. I’ve developed a tendency to judge others less harshly [now] after enduring scrutiny for so long. I evaluate individuals based on my knowledge of them and their behavior, rather than on public sentiment warning me to steer clear; I’m only inclined to do so if they establish themselves as unworthy of my trust.”
The Life of a Showgirl is now available.
