It Looks Like California Is Going To Stand Up To Trump And Approve Redistricting

If Donald Trump’s current polling trends hold any water, the 2026 midterms could usher in a tsunami against Republican candidates. However, with Trump and his allies seemingly hell-bent on manipulating the electoral landscape to carve out more Republican strongholds, nothing can be taken at face value.

Californians have shown a preference for their independent redistricting system, which means Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) request for a temporary overhaul is nothing short of monumental.

Newsom seeks the approval of voters for a new redistricting plan that would be in effect until after the 2030 Census, after which the state would revert back to its independent redistricting process.

There’s potential for voters to be less enthusiastic about this proposal, especially following Trump’s deployment of ICE and National Guard troops to the state—a move that has stirred anxiety and opposition.

Nevertheless, recent polling has indicated that Newsom’s approach to his redistricting initiative—including his rationale for its urgency—strikes a chord with the electorate.
