Jack Smith’s Public Hearing Massively Backfires On Republicans

Jim Jordan, the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, recently attempted to sidestep a public hearing for Jack Smith. Initially, he rejected Smith’s request for an open forum. Subsequently, Smith provided his testimony in a closed session, but only after the outcry from the public and Smith himself did Jordan finally agree to an open hearing.

Given the current trajectory for Republicans, Jordan might now be wishing he had adhered to his initial plan.

The GOP’s overarching aim appears to be to frame Smith’s investigation as a politically charged attack that infringed upon the constitutional rights of Donald Trump and his associates.

However, this narrative falters upon the realization that Trump’s constitutional protections likely evaporated once he engaged in the alleged criminal activities aimed at overturning the 2020 election.

This inconvenient truth hasn’t deterred Republicans from persistently echoing unfounded allegations of “spying” and rights violations.

While they strive to portray Smith as a partisan antagonist targeting Trump, their efforts are proving to be fruitless.

Compounding their troubles is Trump, who continues to publicly discuss the case against him, inadvertently bolstering Smith’s position.

Smith has even pointed out that he had credible Republican witnesses prepared to testify against Trump:

“There were witnesses who I felt would be very strong witnesses including, for example, the Secretary of State in Georgia who told Donald Trump the truth, told him things that he did not want to hear and put him on notice that what he was saying was false. These were people who knew how the elections were conducted in these states, and I believe that witnesses of that nature, witnesses who are willing to tell the truth, even if it’s going to impose a cost on them in their lives.”

“My experience as a prosecutor over 30 years is that witnesses like that are very credible and that jurors tend to believe witnesses like that because they pay a cost for telling the truth.”

However, the moment Smith confronted the lie that Trump continues to propagate about the 2020 election being rigged, things took a turn for the worse for both the former president and his party.
