Democratic strategist James Carville has advised against using the phrase “Abolish ICE” amid protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis and nationwide.

Carville, in remarks on his “Politics War Room” podcast with Al Hunt, criticized Democrats for using the term “abolishing” instead of advocating for reform or improving ICE.

He described “Defund the Police” as the “three stupidest words” and compared the anti-ICE slogan to the popular phrase during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. Carville stated, “The left is universally wrong about everything.”

Carville expressed the importance of having some form of immigration and customs control in the U.S., although he criticized recent actions by ICE as “horrible.”

His comments came following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, leading to ongoing clashes between protesters and federal authorities in the city.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has also opposed the idea of “abolishing ICE,” while a House Democrat has called for legislation to dissolve the agency, citing it as “totally out of control” and “beyond reform.”

A recent poll by The Economist/YouGov showed that 46% of respondents supported abolishing ICE.

Carville highlighted that some ICE agents are dedicated professionals, but he believes that the number is lower than perceived. He raised concerns about agents with insufficient training carrying weapons and using force.

He emphasized the necessity of having an agency responsible for immigration and customs affairs in the country, stating that it is crucial to have an expert workforce handling such matters.
