Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have directed a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and the White House Counsel, seeking insights and documents related to President Trump’s controversial acceptance of a plane from Qatar.

The Democrats asserted:

It seems that your offices are complicit in President Trump’s efforts to obscure this glaring constitutional breach by shrouding his questionable acceptance of this unprecedented “gift” in a haze of legal jargon. According to reports, the White House Counsel’s Office and the Department of Justice (DOJ) produced an analysis for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which concluded that the Department of Defense could legally accept the aircraft as a gift and subsequently relinquish it to the Trump library without breaching any bribery laws or the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which prohibits U.S. officials from accepting gifts from foreign leaders.

Furthermore, the same report indicates that Attorney General Pam Bondi and Trump’s chief White House lawyer, David Warrington, determined it would be ‘legally permissible’ for the aircraft donation to be contingent upon transferring ownership to Trump’s presidential library before his term’s conclusion, as per sources acquainted with their findings.

The Constitution distinctly states that only Congress holds the authority to accept or reject any gifts ‘of any kind whatever’ from foreign governments to the President. It is also worth noting that, even if Attorney General Bondi had a constitutional role in this matter, her previous registration as an official agent for the Qatari government creates a significant conflict of interest, given her lucrative lobbying compensation of $115,000 per month.

The Foreign Emoluments Clause was designed to ensure that actions taken by the President and other officials are motivated by the best interests of the United States, not those of foreign powers. President George Washington underscored this concern in his farewell address of 1796, cautioning against ‘the insidious wiles of foreign influence,’ warning that such influences are among the most pernicious threats to republican governance.
