10 and selected Thad Ward, a right-handed pitcher out of Central Florida. Ward was projected to go much higher in the draft, so the Mariners were thrilled to land him where they did.

  • Axisa: “The Mariners had a pretty good night. They got value with Ward, who could be a top-of-the-rotation arm in a few years. He has a good fastball and a promising breaking ball, and he could move quickly through the minors.”

On the flip side, the Tigers had a bit of a disappointing night. Detroit selected Cade Horton, a two-way player out of Oklahoma, with the No. 3 overall pick. Horton is a talented player, but there were concerns about his ability to stick as a position player or pitcher long term.

Overall, the first round of the MLB Draft was full of surprises and excitement. As teams look to build for the future, the young players selected on Sunday night will be the cornerstones of their organizations for years to come.

😄 Honorable mentions

SHOHEI OHTANI

As if we needed any more evidence that Shohei Ohtani is a once-in-a-generation talent, the two-way star put on a show in the Home Run Derby on Monday night. Ohtani hit an astounding 28 home runs in the first round, breaking the previous record of 27 set by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2019.

Ohtani ultimately fell to Pete Alonso in the final round, but his performance was nothing short of incredible. As the All-Star festivities continue, Ohtani’s star continues to shine brighter and brighter.

The Seattle Mariners had a stroke of luck at this year’s draft lottery, as they were able to secure the top pitching prospect, Kyle Anderson, with the third overall pick. According to Axisa, the Mariners would have had no chance to draft Anderson had they remained at their original spot at No. 17. Anderson, who was considered the top pitching prospect in the draft class, was a strong candidate to go No. 1 overall. The fact that the Mariners were able to snag him at No. 3 is a major win for the organization.

The excitement continued at the draft when the Colorado Rockies selected Ethan Holliday at No. 4 overall. Holliday, the son of former Rockies star Matt Holliday, will have the opportunity to continue his father’s legacy in purple and black. The first five picks of the draft played out as follows: Nationals selected Eli Willits at No. 1, Angels picked Tyler Bremner at No. 2, Mariners secured Kyle Anderson at No. 3, Rockies grabbed Ethan Holliday at No. 4, and Cardinals chose Liam Doyle at No. 5.

In addition to the draft picks, our team of MLB experts also handed out grades for every first-round selection. While the White Sox received positive feedback for their pick, the Giants made a more questionable decision. As we head into Day 2 of the draft, baseball fans are eager to see which prospects will be selected next, including an SEC quarterback who is generating a lot of interest.

Switching gears to the basketball court, Caitlin Clark put on a show in a game against the Wings, racking up a season-high 13 assists in the Fever’s 102-83 victory. Clark, who is still working her way back from a groin injury, showcased her playmaking abilities by either scoring or assisting on 41 of the Fever’s 102 points. The game also marked the first head-to-head matchup between Clark and Paige Bueckers at the WNBA level, with Bueckers expressing her enjoyment of competing against Clark.
