President Joe Biden has made a bold and controversial decision in the final months of his presidency by announcing that he has pardoned his son, Hunter. The 46th POTUS revealed this news just minutes ago, stating that he has witnessed his son being “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted” and felt compelled to take action.

In a statement released on the White House website, Biden expressed his frustration with the way his son has been treated in comparison to others facing similar charges. He pointed out that individuals convicted of lying on federal forms and paying late taxes due to addiction are typically given non-criminal resolutions, but Hunter was not afforded the same leniency.

According to Biden, the charges against Hunter only came about after Republicans in Congress weaponized them to attack him. He cited a plea deal in the tax evasion case that fell apart in 2023, with his political opponents taking credit for applying pressure on the legal system to derail the agreement.

The President emphasized his belief in the legal system but expressed concern that it is being manipulated for political gain in his son’s case. He stated that he could not stand idly by while Hunter faced the prospect of imprisonment for actions that have been unfairly scrutinized.

This decision by Biden has drawn comparisons to former President Donald Trump, who made similar comments after being convicted on multiple counts of falsifying business records earlier this year. Democrats criticized Trump for his remarks, highlighting the potential consequences of using political influence to evade legal repercussions.

Biden concluded his message by appealing to the understanding of the American people, stating, “I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.”

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles stemmed from his conviction on three felony counts of lying on a federal firearms application in June, all related to his drug use. Facing a potential 25-year prison sentence, he later pleaded guilty to nine federal charges in September for failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019.

The President’s decision to pardon his son comes as a surprise to many, as he had previously stated that he would not intervene in Hunter’s legal matters. With his presidency coming to an end and no more elections on the horizon, Biden may have felt that this pardon would not impact his future political prospects.

Hunter was set to be sentenced in both cases later this month, but now, thanks to his father’s pardon, he will be spared from facing further legal consequences.
