Kevin Durant speaks for first time on Suns’ newly traded 7-foot Jamaican big man

The Phoenix Suns made a significant move on Wednesday by acquiring Jamaican-born big man Nick Richards from the Charlotte Hornets. This trade not only gives the Suns some relief in terms of their tax bill this season but also provides much-needed frontcourt depth to support Kevin Durant and the team amid Jusuf Nurkic’s struggles.

Currently sitting at 11th place in the competitive Western Conference, just half a game behind the 10th-place Golden State Warriors, the Suns are hoping that Richards will give them a boost as they approach the midway point of the season. Richards has been performing well, averaging 8.9 points on 56.1% shooting, along with 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game this season. Durant is eager to see how Richards will contribute to the team.

In an interview with AZ Central’s Duane Rankin, Durant expressed his excitement about Richards joining the Suns and highlighted the impact the big man’s gritty interior play will have on the team’s performance. Durant praised Richards for his strong presence in the paint, rim protection, offensive rebounding, and finishing ability, emphasizing the importance of controlling the paint collectively as a team.

Following the trade for Richards, the Suns also bid farewell to Josh Okogie, who was traded to the Hornets along with three second-round picks. Although Okogie played limited minutes this season, his hard work and tenacity earned him respect from both fans and teammates, including Durant. Durant acknowledged Okogie’s dedication to the game and his teammates, wishing him well in Charlotte.

With the addition of Richards, the Suns are now contemplating whether this move will be their only trade before the deadline. While Richards strengthens the team’s frontcourt, there is a consensus that the Suns may need to make another acquisition to enhance their chances of success in the competitive Western Conference. Despite having a formidable trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, additional frontcourt depth may not be sufficient to position the Suns as a serious playoff contender.

As the Suns navigate the rest of the season, the team will continue to assess their roster and explore potential opportunities to bolster their lineup. The trade for Richards is a step in the right direction, but Phoenix may need to make further moves to solidify their position in the Western Conference standings. With Durant leading the charge, the Suns are determined to make a significant impact in the postseason.
