Former LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner has come out with strong allegations against current leader Alberto Carvalho, accusing him of misusing tens of millions of dollars in arts funding. Beutner claims that Carvalho diverted public funds meant for arts teachers to fill gaps in the district’s budget, a move that he says violates the law and deprives students of the benefits of arts education.

According to Beutner, Carvalho misused $77 million in state arts education funding that was supposed to pay for arts teachers as mandated by Proposition 28, a law passed by voters in 2022. Beutner obtained a secret internal document that allegedly shows Carvalho admitting to the LAUSD board that the funds were not being used as required by law.

The funding from Proposition 28 is meant to ensure that every school has an art teacher, but only about one in five LAUSD schools currently has one. Beutner, who played a key role in drafting the legislation, is calling for the district to use the millions of dollars to pay for arts teachers as intended by the law.

Carvalho, who has been under scrutiny following FBI raids last month related to alleged fraud and corruption, has been placed on paid administrative leave. Beutner’s letter also highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the wake of the FBI investigation.

The lawsuit filed by Beutner and a group of parents against LAUSD is still in litigation, with the judge indicating that the district may lose its argument that it is using the funding legally. Enrollment in LAUSD is declining, leading to budget shortfalls and potential layoffs and school closures.

With Carvalho on leave, acting superintendent Andrés Chait is now in charge of the nation’s second-largest district. Beutner’s letter urges the district to do the right thing and address the misuse of funds to ensure that students receive the arts education they deserve.

The district declined to comment on Beutner’s claims, stating that they do not discuss pending litigation. The ongoing situation at LAUSD underscores the importance of proper fund allocation and adherence to the law to provide students with a well-rounded education. scratch:

Title: The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

In recent years, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. With platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, we are constantly connected to each other and the world around us. While social media has many benefits, such as staying in touch with friends and family, sharing experiences, and discovering new information, it also has a dark side that can negatively impact our mental health.

One of the main ways that social media can affect mental health is through comparison. When we scroll through our feeds, we are bombarded with carefully curated images and posts from others that may not reflect reality. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, and low self-esteem as we compare our lives to the seemingly perfect lives of others. Studies have shown that excessive social media use is linked to increased feelings of depression and anxiety.

Another way that social media can harm mental health is through cyberbullying. With the anonymity that social media provides, people can easily hide behind a screen and engage in hurtful behavior towards others. This can have devastating effects on the mental well-being of those who are targeted, leading to feelings of isolation, shame, and even thoughts of self-harm.

Furthermore, the constant notifications and pressure to constantly be online can contribute to feelings of overwhelm and stress. The fear of missing out (FOMO) can drive people to spend hours scrolling through their feeds, leading to sleep deprivation, decreased productivity, and a constant state of distraction.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Social media can also have positive effects on mental health when used mindfully. It can be a source of support and connection, allowing people to find communities of like-minded individuals who share similar experiences. It can also be a platform for self-expression and creativity, providing an outlet for people to share their thoughts, feelings, and talents with the world.

To protect our mental health in the age of social media, it’s important to set boundaries and practice self-care. This can include limiting our screen time, unfollowing accounts that make us feel bad about ourselves, and taking breaks from social media when needed. It’s also important to remember that what we see online is not always the full picture and to take everything with a grain of salt.

In conclusion, while social media has revolutionized the way we connect and communicate with each other, it’s important to be aware of its potential impact on our mental health. By using social media mindfully and setting boundaries, we can harness its benefits while protecting our well-being.
