Wizards of the Coast, the creator of Magic: The Gathering, introduced several new card sets on the first day of MagicCon 2026 in Las Vegas on Friday. These include collaborations with Marvel and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”
The latest set in the ongoing partnership between Marvel and the Hasbro-owned Wizards, the Magic: The Gathering-Marvel Super Heroes set, is set to launch on June 26. It will feature iconic characters from the Marvel Universe, ranging from legendary heroes to formidable villains, all reimagined within the Magic gameplay.
MCU actor Paul Bettany, known for his role as The Vision in modern Marvel films, made an appearance at MagicCon to reveal a new card, “The Mind Stone.” This card signifies the next chapter in the Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes saga. Bettany also had the privilege of placing a Mind Stone gem onto a real-life Infinity Gauntlet, crafted by East Continental Gems for Marvel.
Scheduled for release on August 14, “The Hobbit” set will offer cards inspired by the classic tale, combining rich storytelling with strategic gameplay. Players will journey with familiar allies and face formidable adversaries, such as the Gleaming Gold Smaug, the Magnificent headliner card, Middle-earth Classic Artist Cards, and Dwarven Language Cards.
According to the set’s description, players will travel from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain with Bilbo Baggins in a set that captures the whimsy and heart of this beloved fantasy adventure. Gamers will encounter trolls, solve riddles in the dark, and confront Smaug himself, all brought to life through Magic’s gameplay and design.
The Marvel and “Hobbit” sets are part of Magic’s “Universes Beyond” collection, which incorporates third-party intellectual properties into the popular tabletop trading card game.
Additionally, teasers were released for MTG’s upcoming “Reality Fracture” set, which is described as the epic conclusion to the narrative arc that began with Wilds of Eldraine three years ago. It will be available on October 2. Also introduced were “Mood Swings,” a brand-new trading card game from Magic’s head designer Mark Rosewater, and a cat-themed “Secret Lair” drop, launching on June 15.
