A recent incident at the Jackson Red Line station in Chicago has once again shed light on the issue of sexual assaults in public spaces. Kurtis Porter, 29, was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a woman inside a CTA elevator at the station. The assault took place on January 27 in the Loop area.
According to authorities, Porter followed a 29-year-old woman onto an elevator at the Jackson station around 5:40 p.m. Security camera footage from the CTA shows Porter obstructing the surveillance camera upon entering the elevator, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal his actions. The victim reported that Porter exposed himself, sexually abused her, and even grabbed her face during the attack.
Fortunately, a transit supervisor recognized Porter from police bulletins and alerted nearby patrol officers, leading to his swift arrest. Judge Shauna Boliker ordered Porter to be detained following the incident.
Porter has a history of arrests, with 14 prior incidents since becoming an adult in 2014. Most of these arrests were for misdemeanors, with many charges ultimately being dropped. However, there was a domestic battery case in 2019 that ended with court supervision that Porter did not satisfactorily complete, as well as two trespassing charges that resulted in a short sentence in November.
This assault at the Jackson station is not an isolated incident. In December, Rasheed Griffin sexually assaulted a 33-year-old woman using a wheelchair on an inbound Red Line train and in an elevator at the same station. Griffin’s actions were captured on CTA surveillance video, showing him wheeling the victim off the train and assaulting her inside the elevator.
Griffin was arrested shortly after the incident and remains detained on charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault of a handicapped person, aggravated battery in a public place, and aggravated battery of a handicapped person. This was Griffin’s sixth arrest in Chicago in 2025 and his third within a six-week period.
These incidents highlight the importance of vigilance and safety measures in public transportation spaces. The CTA and CPD are working together to address these issues and ensure the safety of passengers. It is crucial for authorities to take swift action in response to such crimes and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
