Mark Halperin stands out among mainstream journalists for his candid acknowledgment of what he terms “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS) — a phenomenon he argues is fueling the chaotic climate currently observed in California.
In a recent video, Halperin elaborated on this syndrome, asserting it as a significant factor driving the current unrest. He emphasized the limitations of local law enforcement in managing large-scale protests, noting that calling in the National Guard was a reasonable response to the challenges at hand. However, he suggests that a certain segment of the political left seems unable to temper their reactions to anything associated with Trump.

This isn’t merely a southern California issue, nor is it solely about immigration. What I aim to address here is Trump Derangement Syndrome.
This serious condition has afflicted millions of Americans; it’s no laughing matter. The reasons behind why Donald Trump evokes such extreme reactions remain somewhat elusive to me.
We observe manifestations of this syndrome in California and across the nation, particularly following Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard and potentially active-duty military forces to address the pressing realities on the ground. In fact, there are few police departments equipped to manage the scale of protests, especially when they escalate into violence. The necessary infrastructure simply isn’t there.
Thus, invoking the National Guard is a sensible course of action. Yet, the events unfolding in California epitomize Trump Derangement Syndrome. We’re witnessing it nationwide as well. For reasons that are hard to fathom, Trump has stirred deep-seated anxieties on the left regarding immigration—something that traces back to his 2015 campaign launch.

Halperin’s observations merit consideration. The challenge with TDS is that it doesn’t discriminate; it affects not only the everyday citizen but also elected officials and media personnel. Those ensnared by it often fail to recognize how irrational their responses can appear to others. Regrettably, a definitive cure for this affliction remains elusive.
