The Phoenix Mercury suffered a setback as Kahleah Copper underwent a left knee arthroscopy, which will keep her out of action for four to six weeks. Copper, who played in the preseason game against the Las Vegas Aces on May 6, was initially listed as day-to-day before the need for surgery was determined. The talented guard will miss the team’s season opener against the Seattle Storm.

In an Instagram post following the announcement, Copper shared a message of faith and resilience, stating, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Last season, Copper missed only 37 games due to injuries, including a right leg injury that cut her season short. Unfortunately, she suffered a left leg injury while preparing for the 2025 campaign with the Mercury. This injury comes as a significant blow to the team, especially after the retirement of Diana Taurasi and the departure of Brittney Griner.

As the third-leading scorer last season, Copper was expected to play a crucial role in the revamped team. With her absence, the Mercury will rely heavily on new acquisitions Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally to step up in her absence.

Adding to their injury concerns, Natasha Mack, who played every game last season for the Mercury, will also be sidelined for three weeks due to a lower back injury. Mack returned to the WNBA in 2024 after a two-year break and was expected to provide depth to the team’s frontline following Griner’s departure.

The absence of Copper and Mack could pose challenges for the Mercury in the early stages of the season. The team will need to adjust and find ways to overcome these setbacks as they aim to compete in a highly competitive league.

In conclusion, the Phoenix Mercury will face adversity in the form of injuries to key players, but they will look to rally together and find ways to stay competitive in the WNBA. The team’s depth will be tested, but with the resilience and determination of the players, they will strive to overcome these obstacles and make a strong push for success in the upcoming season.
