“Saturday Night Live” comedian Michael Che has taken a stand against the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amidst the ongoing government shutdown. In a recent Instagram post, Che expressed his outrage at the SNAP freeze, calling it “really messed up.” He also called out the racist reactions he has seen, particularly targeting black families who are unable to purchase groceries due to the suspension of SNAP benefits.

Che highlighted the double standard that exists when it comes to welfare benefits, pointing out that while some individuals may abuse the system, it does not justify denying help to those who truly need it. He emphasized the unfair judgment placed on poor people, especially within the black community, who are often scrutinized for any attempt to make ends meet.

Having experienced a childhood marked by reliance on government assistance, Che shared a personal anecdote about growing up on free cheese and powdered milk, and the shame associated with using food stamps in public. He debunked the myth that living on welfare is glamorous, stressing the challenges and stigma that come with it.

The government shutdown, which began on October 1, has left many federal services in limbo as lawmakers struggle to reach a consensus on funding. With Republicans and Democrats at odds over key issues, the Senate has yet to pass a crucial funding bill, leaving many programs, including SNAP, in jeopardy.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, responsible for overseeing SNAP, initially announced a halt in benefits starting November 1. However, federal judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island intervened, ruling that the Trump administration must utilize contingency funds to ensure at least a portion of SNAP benefits are distributed. The administration has until Monday to respond to the court’s decision.

Che’s outspoken advocacy for those affected by the SNAP freeze serves as a reminder of the harsh realities faced by many Americans during the government shutdown. His message resonates with those who understand the importance of providing assistance to those in need, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. As the debate over government funding continues, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of vulnerable populations and ensure that essential programs like SNAP remain accessible to those who rely on them.
