Mickey Drexler, a retail industry veteran known for his bold leadership style and ability to drive results, has had a long and successful career in the retail world. From his time at Ann Taylor to Gap Inc. and J.Crew, Drexler has a track record of turning companies into retail powerhouses.

In 2019, Drexler took on the role of chairman at Alex Mill, a New York-based brand founded by his son, Alex, in 2012. Unlike his previous roles, Drexler had to exercise patience with Alex Mill, allowing the brand to grow and evolve over time. The brand started with a focus on men’s button-down shirts but has since expanded to offer a full range of men’s and women’s fashion, known for its colorful knits and use of natural materials.

What sets Alex Mill apart from Drexler’s past endeavors is the attention to detail and the behind-the-scenes approach to building the brand. Drexler, along with his son Alex and the brand’s creative director, Somsack Sikhounmuong, who previously worked with Drexler at J.Crew, operate without the oversight of investors. This hands-on approach allows the team to focus on the creative direction of the brand without bureaucratic constraints.

During a recent meeting at Alex Mill’s SoHo offices, Drexler, Alex, and Sikhounmuong discussed the brand’s latest offerings, including a mini tote bag and ballet flats. These new products mark the brand’s expansion into women’s wear, a move that was inspired by the success of their men’s clothing line. The ballet flats, made in Florence and available in seven colors, and the Perfect Little tote, set to launch on March 10, are examples of the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

In a candid interview, Drexler shared his insights on the retail industry and the importance of staying true to the brand’s vision. At 81 years old, Drexler is unapologetically himself and remains focused on driving Alex Mill’s success. With a “small is the new big” mentality, Drexler believes that the brand’s nimble approach sets it apart in an industry dominated by bureaucratic giants.

As Alex Mill continues to grow and evolve, Drexler’s hands-on leadership style and commitment to quality will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the brand’s future. By staying true to their vision and focusing on the details, Alex Mill is poised to make a lasting impact in the world of fashion.
