Mills drops out of Maine Senate race, setting up Platner to face Collins

On Thursday, Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills announced the suspension of her Senate campaign as her progressive rival, oyster farmer Graham Platner, maintained his lead in both polling and fundraising.

This development marks a surprising downturn for Mills, who was previously favored by national Democrats in the race.

The decision by Mills paves the way for a likely election face-off between Platner and Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine. Collins, a five-term senator, has a strong electoral history, yet Democrats remain optimistic about their chances to unseat her amid discontent with the Republican Party and President Donald Trump.

In a statement released Thursday morning, Mills expressed her determination and experience but acknowledged a lack of necessary financial backing, saying, “While I have the drive and passion, commitment and experience, and above all else – the fight – to continue on, I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources.”

This is a breaking news article that will be updated.
